Trucking Insurance Information

Trucking Insurance

The right insurance can protect you and your truck, as well as any cargo on board. There are various insurance options to choose from, so selecting the appropriate coverage for your specific trucking needs is extremely important. Lux Insurance can help you review your commercial auto policy and can help you to pick any additional policy options you may want to have for your trucking needs.

What Insurance Covers My Transportation Needs?

Transporting goods is one of your primary roles as a truck driver, and you must do so safely and efficiently. Not doing this can cause accidents or create other hazards that could be very costly. Commercial auto insurance offers a financial safeguard in such an occurrence.

Commercial auto insurance can include coverages including:

  • Comprehensive coverage provides complete protection for damages unrelated to an accident, such as losses related to theft, floods, vandalism and fires.

  • Liability coverage provides a range of protection if you damage another person’s vehicle or property in an accident.

  • Medical payment and lawsuit coverage offers protection for accident-related expenses, including medical costs, lost wages and legal fees if you are sued.

  • Physical damage and collision protection reimburses policyholders for the costs of vehicle repairs needed following a crash, regardless of who is at fault. Many policies also provide coverage for uninsured and underinsured motorists.

Commercial auto insurance policies are usually customizable, and many policyholders opt to add endorsements, which depend on their individual needs.

Are Other Types of Coverage Available?

Numerous other types of insurance can supplement your commercial auto insurance for your trucking operations. These include:

  • Bobtail liability coverage: If you drive without a trailer or with an empty trailer (even on dispatch), this liability coverage can apply.

  • Environmental liability coverage: If you haul hazardous materials or contaminants, you may need this coverage. It can help you clean up the damage and pay other costs resulting from spills and other accidents.

  • Motor truck cargo insurance: A subset of inland marine insurance, cargo insurance can cover the items in your truck that are shipments.

  • Non-owned trailer physical damage coverage: If you own your cab but not your trailer, you will likely need to insure the trailer separately.

  • Non-trucking liability insurance: When you drive your truck for personal or non-business purposes, you can extend your liability coverage during this time.

  • Physical damage insurance: This coverage may pay for damage to your truck and trailer following collisions or other accidents.

  • Primary trucking liability insurance: Liability coverage may pay for third-party injuries or property damage that occurs because a wreck is your fault. Primary coverage can pay for at-fault accidents that occur while you are on dispatch.

  • General liability insurance: This coverage can apply when loading, unloading, or other activities involving a parked truck. It may pay for third-party property damage or bodily injuries.

  • Workers’ compensation: Full-time truckers may also likely qualify for workers’ compensation coverage if they are hurt in an accident while on the job.

How Much Insurance Do I Need?

Many laws and regulations govern how much commercial motor vehicle insurance you should carry. Most independent truckers and trucking companies must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Rules will differ based on various factors.
